Announcing the Good News

You’re getting married and you can’t wait to tell the world. The most important announcement will be to your parents. This should be done in person. If your parents live out of town try to plan a brief visit to share your news.

Often the parents of the bride do not know the parents of the groom. It is important for the families to meet, as they will all want to be involved in the wedding plans.  A brief personal note or a personal phone call is a good way to let other family members and good friends know about your upcoming wedding.

The best way to inform everyone else is through an engagement announcement in your hometown newspaper. This must be received by the newspaper at least one month prior to your wedding.

Most newspapers have a form to complete that will supply them with the necessary information for the article. If no form is available, ask for the life-style or society editor; they can tell you what information that particular newspaper requires. If you would like to include a photograph, a black and white glossy photo is best. It should be a head to shoulder picture of the bride-to-be or of the engaged couple. Again each newspaper differs in photograph sizes, so contact your local paper for this information.

Once you have set the date and reserved the church, you should start planning for your wedding announcement. The information for this announcement will be much the same as the engagement announcement, but will also include the time and place of the wedding, the officiator’s name, and the names of the honor attendant and best man. As in the case of engagement announcements, newspapers typically have a form to complete and varying requirements for photographs. It is always best to check with the society editor. Be sure to follow up with a phone call to the newspaper to confirm receipt of your announcement and photograph.
